A Halbach array is a special arrangement of permanent magnets that augments the magnetic field on one side of the array while canceling the field to near zero on the other side. This is achieved by having a spatially rotating pattern of magnetization.

 

The rotating pattern of permanent magnets (on the front face: left, up, right, down) can be continued indefinitely and has the same effect. The effect of this arrangement is roughly similar to that of many horseshoe magnets placed adjacent to each other, with similar poles touching.

 

Characteristics of Halbach Arrays

Halbach Array Types

 

Halbach array magnets can be divided into three types: linear, circular, and arc Halbach, according to their different shapes.

 

1. Linear Halbach Array Magnets

One application of linear Halbach magnets is as flexible refrigerator magnets. They have a strong magnetic field on their working face, while the magnetic field on the other side is close to zero.

 

Many electronic devices also utilize the advantages of linear Halbach arrays. For example, iPads use a linear Halbach design to ensure that the Apple Pencil snaps precisely to the point where the charging coils are aligned.

 

Applications:

Linear Halbach arrays are used in various applications, ranging from brushless AC motors, voice coils, and magnetic drug targeting to high-tech applications such as wiggler magnets used in particle accelerators and free-electron lasers.

2. Circular Halbach Array Magnets (Ring or Cylinder)

There are three main configurations for a Halbach ring or cylinder: dipole, quadrupole, and sextupole. In a dipole configuration (N=1), the magnetization arrow rotates 60° from one magnet to another. In a quadrupole configuration, the arrow rotates 90°, and in a sextupole configuration, it rotates 120°.

 

In practical applications, the magnets are combined with adhesive and mostly fixed and protected by a metal sleeve on the outside. Arc Halbach arrays are considered when assembling a single circular array is difficult. They serve as sub-assemblies for circular Halbach arrays.

3. Arc Halbach Array Magnets

Arc Halbach arrays are primarily used in linear motors. The levitation principle of a maglev train relies on the interaction between the moving magnet and the magnetic field generated by the current induced in the conductor, resulting in levitation force and magnetic resistance.

 

Improving the buoyancy-to-resistance ratio is crucial for enhancing the performance of the levitation system. This requires the onboard magnet to be lightweight, generate a strong and uniform magnetic field, and exhibit high reliability. The Halbach array is installed horizontally in the center of the car body, generating propulsive force with the winding in the track's center.

 

The Halbach array maximizes the magnetic field with a smaller number of magnets, while the other side has a lower magnetic field, thus avoiding exposing passengers to strong magnetic fields.
